Since I cannot attend (much to my deep regret), my cousin, Donna O'Dea, will attend in my place. She will bring a picture of me in '62 as well as a current one and will deliver my hugs to my old friends in attendance. Please accept these as from my heart. I pray that there is another reunion in the future and that I can be in attendance at that one......Have a blast! Valerie Caruso '62

Did not see a lot of feedback for class of 71. Are there any of you out there that will be in attendance?? I am making plans to be there, but I was hoping others would be on hand as well. Maybe you could drop me a line between now and saturday!!!!

149. jnr@shorenet.net - Oct 13, 2004
Lots of unanswered questions at the message board. Hope it continues after the reunion. There should be MANY more questions then. See y'all Saturday...I've taken up a southern accent after 25 years in Maryland...But the NORTH Jersey accent still shines through when I'm up there. South Jersey residents sound like Philly.

148. HFHigh48@aol.com - Oct 11, 2004
I just got an email from one of the grads who suggested that maybe we can copy our photo from out of our own yearbook (or a photo from that year will do) and attach it to a name tag for easy Identification by others in our class. If you have time to do this, great, if not, we will have name tags on every table for you to fill out when you arrive. Lee Moorhead comm. member REUNION 2004

Hey Greg! (greg Linden '55) I'm bringing something to the reunion that will surprise you....... as it certainly pertains to you. Are you curious???? Gabe DeMartin

143. jnr@shorenet.net - Oct 5, 2004
So, how many people are going to take the tour of the building, and attend Mass? I'll have to practice stair climbing, but I am really looking forward to seeing the old school again. Did we really run up those stairs when late? Joy Linden Loeffler '62

142. jnr@shorenet.net - Oct 5, 2004
First, who is JEG? I'll have to look at my old yearbooks to see if Joe Monti is the one. I think I'll remember the face. But as a bit of a car buff, I really remember the car. Did Joe have a two-tone Olds?

141. jeg@aol.com - Oct 4, 2004

There was someone in the class of '59 or '60 who became a teacher and taught in Hasbrough Heights High School. He had a two-tone green Olds (I think). I finished out at HF, but my sister finished high school at HHHS...'64. Joy Linden Loeffler '62

So glad to hear Sr. Kevin is coming! Thanks Jim! I escorted her through the bar last reunion and if it was said once, it was said 20 times...."Sister, sister...I was your worst Latin student. Don't you remember me?!" Did we ALL think that!!!??? Joy Linden Loeffler '62.

137. ebbsoft@optonline,net - Oct 2, 2004
I spoke with our History teacher Mrs. Bryngil today. She said she had her knee replaced four weeks ago but still may come to the reunion. Hopefully she'll make it!

Ah, Sr. Mary Albert, Corporeal punishment via THE SLIPPER! I remember being volunteered for filling up the used votives, one teaspoon of water in the bottom of glass, then the candle. They broke the mold.

To the Otchy's who have been mentioned in previous messages...Did you move to Hackensack? Joy Linden Loeffler '62

132. jnr@shorenet.net - Sep 20, 2004
To: Lewjan....Who are you? your email address is a bit too cryptic for me. I went to HF during the same years and probably knew you...but don't know who you are now! You probably knew my sister, Karen, who would have graduated in '64 if we hadn't moved to Hasbrouck Heights in 1961. Joy Linden Loeffler '62

131. lewjan@optonline.net - Sep 18, 2004
Hi, I went to HF from 1951 and graduated 1964. Missing just 1/2 7th grade and all 8th grade when we moved to Cliffside. When I was young I worked with Sister Mary Albert in the church cleaning the candles after burned, helped Fr. Bruder with mailings down in the basement of the church with other kids. Spooky down there. The large statues, from the columns in the church, which I believe were the apostles, were moved to the cellar after the renovation. I lov

THANKS TO GEORGE FOLEY - WE NOW HAVE A RIDE AND THANKS TO ALL WHO PUT US TOGETHER ! JO HOFFMANN

128. HFHigh48@aol.com - Sep 13, 2004
Dear Louise I think that it is great that you found one of our grads a ride! The committee meeting yesterday, Sept 12th went very well and I think we accomplished a great deal at the meeting. I am now looking forward to our reunion in October. I do hope that some of the grads will make a decision to attend or they will miss out on all the fun we have planned for that night. It was so good to see the rest of the committee yesterday...can't wait to see you again

I'M LOOKING FOR ANYONE DRIVING FROM THE MIDDLETOWN AREA.

125. NANAMOMO2@aol.com - Sep 8, 2004
Hi, am impressed by the top two names on the list of those scheduled to attend. I remember Ray Frech when he was in the Passion Play. I think he played Pilate. Margaret Duke Otchy was a member of a family that my family had a good friendship with over the years. It will be fun to see them both. Maureen Collins Covone

124. hfhigh48@aol.com - Sep 8, 2004
Dear Giigiillee@aol.com, wish I knew who you were. I have a long list of names from the 1939 graduating class. I tried mailing you a list and the name bounced back. Please write again with an address and one of us will reply with the addresses of your classmates. Hope you can come to the reunion. Lee Moorhead comm. member class of 1948

123. jnr@shorenet.net - Sep 7, 2004
Just back from vacation and checking the messages... It's great to read about all the memories. I don't remember the roof ever being called a "roof garden." There were no plants or trees up there when we attended the dances. Those dances seemed to be attended by kids mostly from Union City. So many of our student body lived in Hoboken, Jersey City, Weehawken, etc. and they didn't come back in the summer. A lot of locals from Union Hill, St. Michaels, Eme

On TAB "History" Saw this about Fr. Grieff, I wonder it the word "episcopal" had meant something other than Anglican in its context below. Any scholars? "His prepatory studies were made with the Jesuits in the pro-gymnasium of Echternach and Tournhout, and his theological studies in the episcopal seminary of Verona, Italy, where he was ordained June 15th, 1878. His first field of missionary work was St. Boniface's, Paterson, October, 1881."

We are looking forward to the reunion on 10/16. Paid a visit to Scheutzen Park two weeks ago to attend the German festival and was struck with a severe case of nostalgia since we (the class of '50) had its Senior Prom in the smaller of the two dining rooms. Anne and George Mayer

119. jforster731@earthlink.net - Sep 6, 2004
Hi everyone, It's been 57 years now but I still have fond memoriws of old HFHS. I hope to see more of the class of '47 on the list soon. Best of luck to the committee and all who attend the reunion. Please feel free to email me. John Forster '47

con't - The high school closed in June of 1972 and re-opened as a grammar school that September. I was in the first kindergarten that year with Mrs. Bruno who later became principal. If you are in Union City it is worth it to go to the old school and ask to see it now. You have to buzz the intercom. They might not speak english though.

117. mdginzo@bellsouth.net - Sep 5, 2004
I got a tour of the school last winter. There is an elevator where the boy's bathroom used to be. They have a sort of garden on the roof also. The gym is still there and is used for meetings. What used to be the grammer school's kindergarten is now storage. The school i snow a retreat and the classrooms now hold beds.

con't - extensive renovations in the school including a modern elevator.

111. rayfrech@bigfoot.com - Aug 27, 2004
The High School clsed in the early 70's, I thin 1971 was the last graduating class. Like many other parochial schools the reason was not a necessarily lack of students, it was funding. The church could not support the school anymore with the shifting demographics of the area. Eventually, an order of priests from Spain took over the school. My dad believes that is now a retreat house, but I may not have that 100% accurate. Anyway I understand that there was ext

Reading some of the messages, I have come to the conclusion that Holy Family School is no longer operating. Could this be true ?? I also am in need of a 1949 yearbook, unfortunately mine is missing. Any help ???

109. kbischof@juno.com - Aug 25, 2004
Ray, I believe you are right. But how many remember that what was the roof garden (I think that is what they called it) was the nuns convent before the fire. Those nuns had to do those steps at least once a day to church and one or two (depending if they taught grammar or high school) at least twice. Once to go to school and again to lunch and back. Karl Bischof '49

108. rayfrech@bigfoot.com - Aug 25, 2004
Somebody check me out on this. It was 2 stairwells up to the Gym; 2 up to the Grammar School but they we longer; 2 up the High School and then 2 up to the roof. You know the whole place is a retreat house, now I think.

107. egans5@inmotion.net - Aug 24, 2004
I DO REMEMBER THE ROOFTOP DANCES,A PERFECT VENUE ON A WARM SUMMER NIGHT.BUT I'LL TAKE YOUR WORD ON THE PRICE OF ADMISSION,& I'M AFRAID I'DE NEED AN ELEVATOR TO MAKE IT THERE TODAY

106. jnr@shorenet.net - Aug 24, 2004
Anyone else remember the roof top dances in the summer? They were great....a cool breeze....a beautiful view (if you were tall or could jump) and a great price...$.25 for just records and the grand sum of $1 if there was a band. And...How many flights was it to the roof...how could we dance after we climbed all those stairs!!!

Hello. Looking for Michael Clark, Lorraine Musto, Michael Maniscalco, Danny and Cathy Crabbe, Felix Pacheco, Rudy Castillo. In addition, does anyone know about Donald Torrance and how he passed away? These people would be from teh grammar school and about 38 years old now.

Thanks to Mr. Bischof...what a beautiful photo of the inside of HOly Family Church! We went to Saturday evening Mass there prior to the last reunion (for old times' sake) and I missed the statues that used to be mounted on each pillar.

101. jnr@shorenet.net - Aug 17, 2004
Anybody else notice that the name "Shalhoub" has become famous?! The best ones attended Holy Family School! A Tony Shalhoub from somewhere else in the USA had to make a living by acting...in the TV series "Monk"

100. mdginzo@bellsouth.net - Aug 16, 2004
Is there anyone here who attended HFS in the seventies? I am of the high school grad class of 184. I am looking for anybody that had Mrs. Bruno for kidergarten and sister Maura for 1st grade. Thanks. Mark Ginzo

99. cwavra@att.net - Aug 14, 2004
My dad (Daniel Germaine) was a 1941 (I think) graduate of Holy Family. I have given him this web-site and hope that he will attend. I think it is a great idea to have an all class reunion. I have a question for one of your 1950 graduates, Frank Curriero. Were you the head of the Math department of Palisades Park High School?

Val, Okay I will grant you that the Sit doesn't really come through one for one, but vis= force (strength, vigor). Can you put it together now? No coaching Princess Leah! or Karl Bischof.

88. vveltri@comcast.net - Aug 4, 2004
Valerie Caruso '62: "Sanctimonialis" is "Sister"; "vobiscum" is "be with you". I'm still trying to figure out "Sit vis". You got me curious and I wish he'd answer, too! I just wrote to Sr. Kevin but forgot to ask!

Lee, sorry to inform you that Fr. Geiger passed away on July 20, 2002. He is on our deceased list.

81. hfhigh48@aol.com - Jul 15, 2004
You are so right Ray, I do laugh when I tell the story ! However I still cannot think of Fr Weitekamp in a friendly way, but I did admire and respect Fr. Geiger. I always said he was the closest to Jesus as any man I have ever known on this earth. He is still nursing the sick out in E.Orange NJ and he is very sick himself. So my experience balanced itself out. Lee Moorhead class of 48

80. kbischof@juno.com - Jul 14, 2004
Thank you Ray Frech for the message in defense of Fr. Weitekamp. To like him you really had to know him. I was always a little puny boy and one day on the way home from school for lunch these big boys took my hat and tossed it to one another as kids often do. I was trying to get it back and Fr. Weitekamp comes along. All the kids ran except one and me. He asks the kid where he lives. He pointed to Bergenline Ave. Fr. faced him in that direction and kicked him i

79. kbischof@juno.com - Jul 14, 2004
I just noticed that the last part of my message in answer to Maureen Collens Covone on July 13 was cut off. I don't know how that happened. This is what it should have said: I remember when Fr. Weitekamp came to Holy Family, the first thing he said, "I have to get the nuns out of that firetrap. The wiring is really bad throughout the school". Because of the war, he couldn't build a new convent. So he made many trips to Washington, DC to get priority to

78. cath_dumas@yahoo.com - Jul 14, 2004
Thanks to Karl Bischof for the picture.

77. rayfrech@bigfoot.com - Jul 14, 2004
As far as Fr. Weitekamp was concerned, what could you expect from him? He was a Met Fan. I used to watch the games with him while I was on phone duty at the rectory. A lot of people didn't care for his style, but you can really say that he was a priest's priest. I'm sure Lee laughs when she thinks about he incident. Remember 5th grade's Sr. Mary Albert's slipper on the back of the hand? Remember the guy whose family sued the nun for pushing him into the blackbo

76. egans5@in-motion.net - Jul 13, 2004
I never witnessed any physical punishment at HF,except an occasional thrown eraser or ruler across the knuckles. But the school I attended prior was taught by Irish Christian Brothers & they could get very physical.Father Young was my favorite Priest at HFHS.

75. ebbsoft@optonline.net - Jul 13, 2004
An adult man punching a young girl in the face sure sounds way outside of acceptable norms!! In the fall of 1963 Sister Paul Miriam slapped my face on 3 separate occasions, one being a backhand that drew blood. One of the 3 slaps was deserved, but 2 weren't. One involved me pushing coats around as I tried to get out of the hallway coat rack after I had been pushed in :-) Eric '67

74. hfhigh48@aol.com - Jul 13, 2004
Fr. Weitekamp is the only person who ever punched me in the mouth. It was because I told him I did not believe in Limbo. Now it is not even taught in the Catholic schools anymore. I really liked all the nuns though, they were very kind. Lee Moorhead class of 48

73. kbischof@juno.com - Jul 13, 2004
This is in answer to Maureen Collens Covone. I have heard that the fire started in the bowling alleys, or in the gym from a cigarette from the bingo players. But Father Weitekamp insisted that it was an electrical fire, which started in the basement, because when the nuns smelled the smoke they couldn%92t turn on the lights. (It happened the morning after my first day in the eighth grade). I remember when Fr. Weitekamp came to Holy Family, the first thing he sa

72. NANAMOMO2@aol.com - Jul 12, 2004
Wrong address in previous note. Forgot the 2! We had to move that year so the Nuns could live in the house where we had lived. Moved to 48th Street but did go to school on 26th St. Yes, it did become Yeshiva later on.

71. NANAMOMO@aol.com - Jul 12, 2004
Regarding the fire in the school. I lived right across the street from the school next to the Rectory. My brother, Tom was a Senior and I was in Fifth Grade. The fire started the evening of the first day of School in Sept.1943. Maybe it started in the bowling alley. Did you know there used to be bowling alleys in the basement!? We awoke to see the school ablaze. It was a scary sight! Maureen Collins Covone

Joe, I've placed a picture of the author James Johnson on the reunion's website, in the "more pictures" section. Because you know what he looks like, perhaps you can look at his picture and tell us all. Eric '67

62. mlandl@novocon.net - Jun 27, 2004
Hello all, I am from the class of '63 and I am wondering where we all are. It seems as though only two of us have registered to attend. Nicholas Curci, if you read this, e-mail me so we can sit at the same table! :-) Mary Lou Lyon Bogart

61. egans5@in motion.net - Jun 27, 2004
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE AUTHOR JAMES JOHNSON OF "THE HISTORY OF HOLY FAMILY SCHOOL" WRITTEN IN 1957 WAS THE TEACHER OF THE SAME NAME WHO TAUGHT THE GRADUATING CLASS THAT YEAR?SINCE THAT WAS MY CLASS.*******JOE EGAN

Yes Lee, I do remember that Lincoln School became a Yeshiva after we left. Does anyone know what is there now? Karl Bischof '49

59. HFHigh48@aol.com - Jun 26, 2004
Dear Ann and Karl That is the school I went to from Kindergarten to the 5th grade, and then we were sent to Robert Waters. While there I took catechism classes at Holy Family once a week, then went there right after I graduated 8th grade. Did either of you know it eventually became a Yeshiva school? I enjoy the messages too and check them out at least once a day. Take care now Lee Moorhead '48

58. kbischof@juno.com - Jun 25, 2004
Hi Ann Finkel Paris. Can't believe that you don't remember the school that we went to after the fire. It was Lincoln School on 26th Street. It was a public school which was closed down, so the city let us use it for a year. I walked there too, as did the nuns. Well...maybe they got a ride.

57. HFHReunion@aol.com - Jun 25, 2004
My brother and I walked to another school, can't remember the name, after our school burned. I was in the 6th Grade. So that was 1943-44. I graduated HF Grammar in 1946. Great site. I enjoy reading the posts. Ann Finkel Paras '48

Bill Millevoi, where are you? Are you coming to the reunion on October 16? I work for Jim Jacobson at St. Peter's College and Tom Muir is visiting him today (6/23/04). They both said to say "Hi!". Barbara Brennan Langon

55. ebbsoft@optonline.net - Jun 21, 2004
According to the same book (see previous message) contracts to build the new school were signed on February 2, 1944, and on October 1, 1944, a little over a year after the fire, the school was solemnly dedicated and blessed by Arch Bishop Thomas J. Walsh and reopened at a cost of $276,000. Eric '67

54. ebbsoft@optonline.net - Jun 20, 2004
According to a small 86 page softcover book by James E. Johnson written in 1957 and entilted "100 Years of Catholicism, A Short History of The Church of the Holy Family, Union City, N. J." the original school was built in 1897 and burned down on Sep. 14, 1943. However, reunion committee member Karl Bischof '49 indicates that he recalls he was in Holy Family's 8th grade in Sep. 1945 for one day and the next morning the school burned down. Eric '67

53. c.feasenmyer36@att.net - Jun 19, 2004
Congratulations to all the committee members who have worked on this reunion. Great website with pictures I have never seen before. When did the original school burn down and when was the school rebuilt? This will be my first HFH Reunion (still living in CT.) and I am looking forward to seeing many of my classmates from '54.

Great website Eric, I am curious, what year is the Gym picture from. I tried to edit the thing but couldn't get too far. I think the coach has too much hair to be Al Arena and is too slim for Matt Sabello but I could almost recognize a cheerleader in the back. If I am wrong about the coach, my guess is that the tall guy could be one of 3 fellows. Hank Finkle, Joe Frangipane or Frank Zink. Any clues for us? Anyone recognize themselves?

47. LOUELSIE@BELLSOUTH.NET - Jun 12, 2004
Lou Matarazzo, Class of '49. I want to thank Karl Bishof for contacting me and telling me about the re-union. I hope to see many of the class of '49. If any of our classmates wish to correspond, please do. Although I live now in South Florida I'm glad to accept this invitation.

Hi, to my great, fun-loving classmates in the class of '61. Hope you are well and happy. Hope to see you in October. Have a nice summer. Re: this webcite: Might I suggest that it be updated from time to time to include a listing of attendees? That might help generate further interest in the event. Best regards, Joe Clark.

Hi all, I'm Walt Bissett Class '61, the years around that time when HF Basketball was the cream of the crop. Can anyone get in touch with some of the Basketball Team. We were close to being State Champs. I can see from note #2 that the Class 1961 had the biggest turnout. Well it figures --- there should be a prize to the Class who are able to bring most of their former class mates. Regards.

Just read all the other messages after I wrote one a few minutes ago. Please identify yourself with your name and class. Since email addresses are often cryptic, it was a bit difficult to identify everyone who took time to write. I now live in Maryland..specifically on the "Eastern Shore" of Maryland, which could have been a separate state. It was settled mostly by Anglo's, who displaced the natives. If your name is not "Smith" or "Jones" they have a reall

I'm confused (easily, unfortunately). Is the opening photo of the school or the Church? It looks like the school, except for the very imposing entry and the roof. These pictures are VERY old, and I don't think I ever saw them before this. Thanks...

I'm hoping to see, not only my family who attended HFHS, but my classmates from 1972 and those who went before mewhen I attended from Sep 1968 through May 1971 (my sister's (Janet) graduating class. The class of 1972 had the unfortunate distinction of being the last graduating class. I felt bad that my younger sister and friends after me could not graduate.
